Joy to the world

joy to the world

How can pappu stay silent for christmas. Here he plays the trumpet.

Joy to the world - lyrics

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Little drummer boy

little drummer boy

Pinky plays her drum to wish everyone a merry christmas.

Little Drummer boy Lyrics

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

*-----*

The "little drummer boy" is about a little boy who has come to see the new born King. Being a shepherd he does not have money to buy gift for the child. But with all the love in his heart he play his drum as best as he can , and infant Jesus thanks him by smiling at him.

O christmas tree

o christmas tree card
Decorating the christmas tree is fun. Wishing you a merry christmas.

Oh Christmas Tree lyrics

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer's here,
But also when 'tis cold and drear.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
From base to summit, gay and bright,
There's only splendor for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee! !"

Time

chasing time
I find myself in a constant race against time. In my school days my favourite topic for any essay was "the value of time". Mainly it was also due to laziness to learn any new essay. I used to be the last one to complete my exam papers and writing an essay extempore was really a nightmare. It would have taken atleast an hour to write an essay on a new topic. So to save time I byHearted the essay and save time(real value for time).

The above picture I made is based on an old malayalam childrens movie where the protagonist child sees himself chasing an alarm in a nightmare. The image stuck in my mind for so many years.

Hopefully this picture will be useful in your presentations where you have to emphasise on strictly following deadlines.

Another inspiration to do this picture is the lines from the poem "if" by Rudyard Kipling which goes
"If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"

So much for the serious part.

Well also speaking about time, here is a video song from old Kannada movie starring Dr.Rajkumar .. "If you come today ,its too early, If you come tomorow its too late, You pick the time, tick tick tick :)

June was really a tough month. It was half year closing. Many projects had to be preponed to fill the target. This kept me really busy and I hardly got any time to post any new cartoon. Now that the month is over there is more time to indulge in my pastime. Which of course means more of my non sense cartoons :)

Taxi Taxi

taxi taxi sakkarakatti [click on picture to see full]

'Taxi Taxi' is a hit song from the movie 'Sakkarakkatti'. The line 'Nanba nee oru ilavasa taxi' in tamil means "Friend!! you are a free taxi". The song was a hit because of its catchy beats, and its video which is choreographed very well. The song sounds like a hip hop number with few lines of rap in between. The song lyrics is listed below

Lyrics - Na. Muthukumar
Singers - Benny Dayal, Blaaze, Viviane, Javed Ali

Why is it called Good Friday?

Good friday Well ! Forgive Pinky's Innocence , but many a people(especially non christians) have asked me the same question. Some have even wished me a "Happy Good Friday". So let me explain it here.

First of all Good Friday is the day Jesus died on the cross. It comes during Holy week which starts with the Palm Sunday and ends with Easter day.

In most of the languages and cultures 'Good Friday' is actually reffered as a 'Sad Friday', or a 'Mourning Friday'. But then how did it become a 'Good Friday' in English. here are many theories. If we go by etymology(study of origin of words) we can see that many words or phrases in English that have the words "Good" or "God" are interchangeably used. For example "Good-bye" is said to be a short form of "God be with you". So in the older times "Good Friday" could have been "God's Friday".

But is the phrase "Good Friday" apt? In the olden times people used to confess their sins in a lambs ear and then send it to the forest or sacrifice it. They believed that their sins will be gone with the lamb. Jesus did the same. He washed away the sins of people by dying on the cross. That is why He is sometimes reffered to as the Lamb. So it is of course a good friday too as His death has brought the greatest good there could be.

Deeps Comments :Statistics and Surveys

False Statistics Statistics reports are a great way to establish your point. The more references to statistic , more the statement looks authentic. But most of the people just getaway with a made up statistic. You can also notice that the survey reports will be always in favour of the person presenting it or the company sponsoring it.

Here are a few ways to make your statistic look credible

  1. Domino reference method : Refer to something that refers to something that refers to ...etc..

  2. Claim that the survey was conducted by some big shot company

  3. Add decimal points. For eg: "Almost 83.45% of the people will like this point."

  4. Cross reference: A refers to B. B refers to A.

  5. But the most important of all is speak with so much confidence as if it was nothing but the truth.

I am sure that almost 98% of you will agree to the above conclusion.

Happy Ugadi

Ugadi Greetings [click on the picture to enlarge]
Ugadi (yug - era, adi - beginning) is the festival marking the beginning of the year(according to the Hindu Lunar calendar) . This is mainly celebrated by states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The festival is also celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

The Festival also marks the beginning of spring. It is the time of unripe mangoes. While the Telugu people make "Ugadi Pachhadi" and "Avakkai"(mango pickles), the Kannadigas make "Bevu-Bella".

Here are a few links with more information on this festival

Saawariya was a 2007 realease Hindi film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film was debut flick for two star kids (Ranbir Kapoor, Son of Rishi Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor, the daughter of Anil Kapoor). The film was over hyped and was a flop. It earned so much bad reviews. But because of the hype it created, few of the scenes from it became a hit. One such scene is the towel scene where the hero dances in a bath towel. Here pappu is doing the same.

Delhi 6 - Massakali

Aye massakali delhi 6

The lines are from the hit song from the movie Delhi 6 starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. Music was composed by double Oscar winner A.R.Rahman.

The scene where the heroine dances on the terrace with a dove on her head was so cute. There is a also a scene in which the hero sees a dream, which has been picturised very well. He sees Qutub Minar on one side and then Eiffel tower on one side. He walks through Delhi streets filled with New York style cabs. He turns to find high rises like in western countries and Streets are filled with Indian crowds.

Hindi Song: Massakali Massakali
Movie or Album: Delhi 6
Singer(s): Mohit Chauhan
Music Director(s): A R Rahman
Lyricist(s): Prasoon Joshi

Smile Pinki

smile pinky
'Smile Pinki' is a tale of a poor Indian village girl who has been left out from the social circle because of her cleft. How her life changes for the good after undergoing a lip surgery forms the crux of the film.

The Film was directed by American Film maker Megan Mylan. It won the Best Short Documentary Award at the Oscars. It is said to have won the hearts of all jury members.

I have not seen this film but can really visualise the theme. Little children with disabilities or imperfections often get left out from their friends circle. Hats off to the team for selecting such a topic.

Here Pinky is holding the Oscar and in her own cute style "shmiling" and "poshing" for photographers.

The Highwayman

pappu as the Highwayman

The Highwayman is a poem by Alfred Noyes. The lines in this cartoon are the first stanza of the poem. With words and descriptive style he paints a whole story. The lines are really fuel for imagination.

Here you can see pappu in the highwaymans costume riding his wooden horse. I learned this poem while in school, and fell in love with the descritive style of the poem. Here is the whole poem.

The Highwayman (by Alfred Noyes)
PART ONE
I

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.
II
He'd a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
They fitted with never a wrinkle: his boots were up to the thigh!
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle, His pistol butts a-twinkle,His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.
III
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred;
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.
IV
And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was white and peaked;
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's red-lipped daughter,
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—
V
"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,Watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."
VI
He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair i' the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(Oh, sweet, black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonliglt, and galloped away to the West.

PART TWO
I

He did not come in the dawning; he did not come at noon;
And out o' the tawny sunset, before the rise o' the moon,
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching—Marching—marching—
King George's men came matching, up to the old inn-door.
II
They said no word to the landlord, they drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window; And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.
III
They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest;
They had bound a musket beside her, with the barrel beneath her breast!
"Now, keep good watch!" and they kissed her.
She heard the dead man say— Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!
IV
She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years,
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight, Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!
V
The tip of one finger touched it; she strove no more for the rest!
Up, she stood up to attention, with the barrel beneath her breast,
She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins in the moonlight throbbed to her love's refrain .
VI
Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horse-hoofs ringing clear;
Tlot-tlot, tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding, Riding, riding!
The red-coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still!
VII
Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer! Her face was like a light!
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.
VIII
He turned; he spurred to the West; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o'er the musket, drenched with her own red blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it, his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.
IX
Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were his spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat,
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat.
* * * * * *
X
And still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding— Riding—riding—
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.
XI
Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard;
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred;
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

oru naaL oru kanavu
The tamil caption says
"oru naaL oru kanavu, adhai naan maRakkavum mudiyaadhu,

which in English translates to
"Once i had dream that I can never forget,
We walked over the rainbow and picked the smiling flowers that were stars"

Here pappu and pinky are picking the smiling stars.

The lines are from the song 'oru naaL oru kanavu' from the tamil movie 'kannukkul nilavu'

The pictures are of 1024x768 size so i can be put as desktop wall paper. I have also made a version without the tamil captions. Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Deeps' Comments on Global Economy

deeps comments on global economy
Of course this is just a cartoon. Many of us might be already hit badly by the recession. But I still wonder why nobody could predict this economic downfall.

Well the person who has inspired me most to do the character Deeps was Dheep Joy Mampilly , one of my School time friends. Dheep had an amazing vocabulary. In his own words "I have a knack of writing relatively abstruse English - and a bit verbose too - as you would know; indeed, I know that this is not appreciated by many, but my object is to use language in a way that makes it humorous because and not in spite of its difficulty. " We used to have Shakespeare classes. In the beginning everyone started reffering to Dheep's english as 'Shakespearean'. By the end evryone was reffering to Shakespeare as 'Dheepian'.

Just to give you a sample of his language I requested him to write dialogues for the same cartoon in his style. It was done during the new year time so it is a little bit old but still here it is.

How I posted javascript on my blog post

I tried a lot of methods to post javascript for the previous post "How I added Recent Comments" , but Blogger prevented me by removing the tags. This is how i finally overcame this.

  1. Copy the code/javascipt you have.
  2. Follow this link http://www.elliotswan.com/postable/
  3. Paste your code there and hit the "make it friendly " button
  4. Copy the code generated and paste in your Post.

Thats it. As simple as that. And just to think that i wasted half a day over this. :(

How I added the Recent comments list to my blog

This post has nothing to do with the actual theme of my blog, but I am including it here as I had to read a lot of articles in the net to finally zero in on a widget that works, and dont want other bloggers to go throught the same routine. Here I am trying to present the simplest ways to add the widget to your blog. I have only tried it in Blogger.

There are two methods and the outputs also vary accordingly.

First Method : I think it was from blogger buster i got this code

<script style="text/javascript" src="http://kunoichi.info/blogger_buster/comments.js"></script><script style="text/javascript">var a_rc=5;var m_rc=true;var n_rc=true;var o_rc=100;</script><script src="http://pappuandpinky.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=json-in-script&callback=showrecentcomments"></script>

copy the above code.

In your blogger 'dashboard' goto 'Layout'. Click on the 'add a Gadget'. Select the 'HTML/Javascript' widget by Blogger. Paste the code there. Give a heading. Do the following modifications

Deeps' comments on Generation Gap

Gyaan : The celebrity on the poster is Aamir Khan. This was the hair style he had for his flick Ghajini. Aamir appeared in this get up for many ads, during the shooting of the film. Many college students copied the same style, leading many of the leading college's to issue notices to ban the hairstyle in campus.

The character Deeps is based on few of my friends whose intellect level were a little higher than the most of us. Dheep Joy Mampilly and Deepak Subramaniam topping the list. So I named him Deeps.

Generation gap: Earlier it used to be felt between people who are atleast many years apart in age. Now that has changed a lot. Just a couple of years is all what you need to feel that difference.

Lajjavathy

Gyaan: 'Lajjavathiyae' was a hit number from the malayalam movie '4 the people'. 'Lajjavathiyae' means 'Hey shy girl'. Music direction was done by Jassie Gift who was then a new comer. The song was totally a new experience, actually a rebel of an entry to the otherwise orthodox malayalam music industry. The song started with english rap and then some catchy malayalm lyrics, all in the brand new voice of the composer Jassie Gift himself.

Many of the elders proclaimed it as blasphemy. Some said he sounded like a drunkard. But the catchy beats of the song just became a big hit among the youngsters.

The movie was such hit mainly because of the song. The opening day of the movie saw many youngsters dressed up as the hero in the song, at the theatres. There were instances when the 'play on request channels' played the song almost 500 times back to back. The movie was later dubbed to Tamil as '4 students' and to telegu 'yuvasena- 4 the people'. In Kannada the song was included in the movie 'hudugaata' starring Ganesh of 'Mungaaru male' fame.

Jassie Gift became successful because he was ready to travel the untrodden path.

Happy pongal to every one. I know it is a little early to wish but next week I will be out of station and wont be able to post. Feel free to send this image as greeting card to your friends.

Gyaan: Pongal is a festival celebrated mainly in the southern states of India especially Tamilnadu. Pongal in Tamil means "boiling over or spill over." The act of boiling over of milk in the clay pot is considered to denote future prosperity for the family.

Pappu and his guitar

pappu plays guitar Gyaan: The lines "Pappu guitar bajaata hai" comes in the song "Pappu can't dance saala". The song is from the movie "Jaane tu ya jaane na".

When I was young I really craved to learn the guitar. But unfortunately for me, or fortunately for people around me, nobody ever bought me one. Whenever anyone close to our family would ask me what I want as a gift, the only thing i would ask is a guitar.

Finally in the year 2008, I was able to purchase one. I still dont know how to play it. People ask me then why I bought a guitar? Well my answer is that I love the sound of guitar, no matter who plays it. So next time any of my friends who know to play the guitar visits me, i will sure give him my guitar and make him play a few songs for me , giving him no chance to say "Oh, I did'nt bring my guitar along".

Ghajini

Gyaan: Ghajini is an Aamir khan starrer hindi movie, which is a remake of a tamil movie of the same name starring Surya, which is again inspired by the film Memento.(phew...)

Wayward philosophy: Everybody has different priorities in life. For some people their career is on top of their priority list. For some it is love, for some it is food, for some it is family. Rather than horroscope it is the priority list that must match when you look for a good partner. For two people to go together well, their priority lists need not be exactly the same but it is enough if they can understand and respect each others list.
The amount of justice you do to your own priority list will decide how much successful you are in life.

Mumbai terrrorist attack

This cartoon was based on the comment by minister R.R.Patil about the terror strike in Mumbai. The comment means "Such small issues happen daily in big cities". This really spurred the public and made them protest. This was really a silly comment to make.
But at that time almost all the ministers were caught in controversies. The media was on a defamation spree, trying to catch fish in troubled waters, bending facts and trying to misinterpret what the politicians say. Many of the wiser politicians chose to remain silent and get blamed for being irresponsible rather than open their mouth and lose their name forever.
One case during that time was that involving kerala chief minister V.S.Achuthanandan making a statement including 'dog '. The media twisted his statements and made people believe that he had insulted a dead soldier(killed in the line of duty during terror attack) by calling him a dog. The people just blindly believed this news and condemned him. There were posters held condemning him during the vigil held a few days after the blast. Senior members of the party apologised but Mr.V.S stood his ground and said firmly that he had not said this. Days after when the whole clip was shown in TV, viewers understood the truth. Minister had made the comment on some other context. The soldiers father also apologised to the minister for the misunderstanding.
So was the media really acting responsibly? When it was so enthusiastic to Flash the news and show the clips 24/7 ,why did'nt it show the news that the previous one was false. Why dint the channel apologise to the whole nation for making them fools? What about the senior ministers who just apologised to the channels on behalf of Mr.V.S instead of really standing by him and waiting to hear the truth?
Here are just 2 lines from the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling.
"If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, "

Imagine

The power of imagination is so vast. Your possibilities are only limited by how much you can imagine. Imagination gives you the power to dream. It gives you wings to fly. It gives you new ideas, and only new ideas can bring changes, and only changes can make the world better.
As children we might have imagined a lot, but as we grow older most of us just lose that skill. Many adults just become mechanical. A simple exercise to build your imagination could be to ask 'what if?', 'why cant it be like?', 'How can I?', etc. One day one of those answers could change your life!!

Pappu and Pinky : The first raw sketch

When I was younger I used to draw cartoon figures of little kids for few of my friends who used to snail mail this to their friends. Most of the pics would that of some little kids crying or hugging teddy bears or in some childish poses. But an idea to really start a series of cartoons just clicked in my mind by the end of 2008.

I sketched the picture above on my notepad for a reason. Actually one of my friends was becoming too bossy and dominating. I did not have the guts to tell it straight on her face. I did'nt want to hurt her too. So I chose to draw this cartoon which was for the moment titled as 'The female terror" and sent it to her. And of course she got my point and had a good laugh at the picture too. She asked me if I could draw more of these as she liked them. This was in the beginning of 2007. The question kept echoing in my mind until mid of 2008 when I thought why not add color to the sketch. I posted these cartoons on Orkut and got good response from my friends. And by 2008 end I was inspired enough to start a series of these cartoons.

Pappu and Pinky : How it started

This is the first drawing of pappu and pinky i made. I had actually done a small pen sketch on my workbook. Then i captured it with my mobile and then colored it in Adobe photoshop.
